Review O Rama!

Dang, things have really picked up regarding reviews for Rosethrone Publishing products.

Bryce Lynch at Ten Foot Pole has been particularly gracious, reviewing three products over the past year...

Last May he reviewed a very early offering, The Shrine of the Fallen Angels.  His review was generally positive, with a number of justified criticisms. He said it was interesting but might not be usable at the table,,,

In July, he reviewed Blackfalls Hall, a longer and somewhat convoluted adventure.  The primary criticisms he pointed out were utility at the table (way too wordy - which I am...) and sometimes the lead of the encounter gets buried (put the most important/first seen stuff first in the description...). This review generated a few helpful comments, too.

A couple days ago he reviewed The Keep of the Broken Saint and gave it a very favorable review, it even made his list of "The Best!" That was pretty gratifying and I am very thankful for Bryce's reviews.

A couple weeks ago, the Blog OSR News and Reviews gave a fairly comprehensive and very favorable review of The Sepulcher of the Burning King. OSR News has noted the release of other Rosethrone products and we have really appreciated that as well. Great resource for new release announcements.

Dreams of Mythic Fantasy (a little NSFW) has announced the last few releases, always glad to read the blog and another great resource for new release announcements.

I know I've already mentioned this, but the first review I discovered was via a random search, a review of the Northern Tier Hexcrawl, way back in 2017!

I'm certain that I've missed a few, and sorry for that!

Upcoming Projects Update

I had so much trouble trying to get the cover right for POD on THE GHOST DOWNS that I gave up.  I will try again - but frustration is a powerful influence...  

THE RUSTED TOMB needs a final rewrite and some formatting changes, but it is essentially complete.

THE PILE AND FALLER VILLAGE is about 80% written.  It needs a couple editing passes once the rest of the writing is complete, then layout and art - maybe by September?  I'm pretty excited about this.  Generally I have been writing adventure locations - without much thought to the framework of "plot" or whatever - I guess kind of in the vein of B2 "Keep on the Borderlands." And I've written this as a location - but there's an optional (and maybe kind of involved) adventure outline that can be used herein.  Some new creatures and unique magic items.  I hope it will be fun.

THE ROSEWOOD HIGHLANDS gazeteer is in process, but is a long way off. The BESTIARY will be incomplete for some time as well, though I hope to update it soon with new creatures from both RUSTED TOMB and THE PILE.

I had a request for the rules SWORDS & WIZARDS IN THE HIGHLANDS - it's still just piles of scattered notes and probably will be for the foreseeable future.  With the exception of a few monster details (like all undead temporarily drain ability scores), the stuff set in the Highlands can be run with any version of D&D/AD&D, retroclone, neoclone, etc...

Another Review

I really sweated it when I saw that Bryce Lynch of the tenfootpole blog purchased one of my adventures: The Shrine of the Fallen Angels.  So I have been watching for a review... while dreading a review at the same time.

His review was generally positive. Every complaint he made I knew was coming (formatting, lack of whitespace, lack of bolding, scaling issues) yet I released the item anyway.  I was afraid that he wouldn't find the adventure gonzo enough, but he never made that comment.  Instead he liked the OD&D vibe.  He commented that the encounters are almost stream of consciousness in presentation.  That's, unfortunately, a really good description of my writing style.

Publishing Lessons Learned 2

Proper format is everything...  Sigh.  I have tried to upload a POD cover for The Ghost Downs three times now. Hope the third time is a charm...  I got a note on the first upload that I messed up the spine width...  I used the template - but somehow got it wrong.  I was very careful in the spine width on the second upload - but it got kicked back with a "general format error" kind of message. Poking around, looks like I didn't leave room on the back for the ISBN.  I MEANT to... but I didn't... Crossing my fingers...

The frustrations of being a one-man show are legion - but this appears to just be inattention on my part.  I forget that POD needs a barcode so I lay out the cover like I would for PDF - trying to get the elements in pleasing balance...

If this was my job, I should be fired... But it's a hobby.  As frustrating as this whole cover thing has been, I've learned a lot and I'm enjoying the process (does that sound contradictory?  Maybe it is...)
